Who qualifies?

Gift Aid can be claimed on donations from UK taxpayers who have paid at least as much Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax in that tax year as the amount you are reclaiming. The donor must complete a Gift Aid declaration.

The rate is 25p for every £1 donated — effectively the basic rate of income tax that the donor has already paid.

Gift Aid tips

You need a declaration form — each donor must sign a Gift Aid declaration before you can claim. Download a template from GOV.UK.
PTAs can claim Gift Aid if registered as a charity with HMRC. Most PTAs registered with the Charity Commission are eligible.
It applies to donations, not payments — raffle tickets, admission fees with something in return, and purchases are generally not eligible. Pure donations and sponsored events usually are.
Claim within 4 years — you can backdate Gift Aid claims up to 4 years from the end of the financial period in which the donation was made.
